Kate Goldsworthy’s research and design work is focused on material innovation and design for recycling. Her practice-based PhD entitled ‘MonoFinishing: novel laser surface treatment of synthetic textiles for recyclability’ is an exploration of new hi-tech tools for textile manufacture and their potential for preserving materials as recyclable resources.
She graduated from Central St Martins (UAL) in 2000, and returned to the University of the Arts London in 2005, first as a doctoral researcher with Textiles Environment Design (TED/CCW), and currently as Course Director of MA Textile Futures (CSM). She is a core member of the Textile Futures Research Centre (CSM/UAL) and continues work as a consultant to industry in the area of new finishing technologies, materials R&D and cradle-to-cradle strategies for design.
She has contributed to international publications and conferences on the subject of sustainable design theory, recycling and the role of the designer in facilitating a more integrated textile industry. Her design work has been exhibited at the Science Museum, the ICA and Crafts Council, (London), the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, USA), and the Audax Textile Museum (Tilburg).
